Smoothie Bowls are not only an easy way to incorporate lots of healthy fruits and vegetables into your diet, but they also taste amazing. They are made with frozen fruit, blended with the liquid of your choice (I prefer almond milk), then topped with lots of yummy toppings like fresh fruit, granola, nuts & seeds, coconut chips and honey. Some call this delicious treat “nice cream” because it tastes like a big ole dairy-free bowl of ice cream! 🙂

MIXED BERRY SMOOTHIE INGREDIENTS

Here’s a quick list of the ingredients you will need:

  • Frozen berries: Frozen fruit is perfect in smoothie bowls as it helps thicken the smoothie bowl without the need of ice cubes. If you have fresh fruit on hand, you can always chop it up and freeze it to use for later 🙂
  • Frozen bananas: The more frozen fruit the better lol! Just peel your bananas and freeze ahead of time to use in your smoothies or smoothie bowl!
  • Almond milk: I prefer non-dairy milk in my smoothie bowls, but of course you can use regular dairy milk as well.
  • Ground flaxseeds: A great source of plant-based protein along with several other nutrients. Make sure to buy “ground” or “milled” flaxseeds.
  • Honey: The perfect sweetener for smoothie bowls! A little goes a long way.
  • Toppings: This is where you can go crazy! Use whatever toppings you like. Some of the best to use are granola, fresh fruit, coconut chips, chia seeds, hemp seeds, cacao nibs, you name it!

HOW TO MAKE A SMOOTHIE BOWL

Full recipe below, but here’s a quick overview:

  • Add your frozen berries, frozen banana, milk, flaxseeds and honey to a blender or food processor.
  • Blend or pulse (if using a food processor) until smoothie starts to come together.
  • Stop every 15 seconds or so if needed to scrape down the sides.
  • Add a little more milk if needed, but not too much as you want the smoothie to be thick to hold the toppings.
  • Add smoothie mixture to a bowl

Top with your favorite toppings and enjoy!

TIPS FOR MAKING THE PERFECT SMOOTHIE BOWL

  • Use frozen fruit for your smoothies. Frozen fruit gives you the perfect smoothie texture without having to use ice. Ice can sometimes water down your smoothie.
  • Sweeteners. Try to stay away from adding regular sugar to your smoothie. Use natural sweeteners instead like honey, maple syrup or dates.
  • Less liquid. Start with ½ cup of milk or liquid of your choice and add more if needed. Using less liquid will help you obtain a thicker smoothie bowl.
