Ingredients

  • 8 oz. spaghetti pasta
  • ¾ cup reserved pasta water
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 lb. ground turkey*
  • 1 ½ Tablespoons Italian seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 Tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 14.5 oz. can Italian-style diced tomatoes**
  • 1 8 oz. can tomato sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar

Instructions

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the spaghetti pasta and boil according to the package instructions until the pasta is tender. Reserve about ¾ cup of the pasta water then drain the pasta in a colander. Set the pasta to the side.
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onions and saute for 3 minutes. Add the minced garlic and saute for an additional 30 seconds.
  • Now add the ground turkey and cook, breaking up the turkey meat, until fully brown.
  • Add the spaghetti seasoning (Italian seasoning, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and black pepper to the skillet. Stir to combine all the spices with the ground meat.
  • Add in the tomato paste and ½ cup of the reserved pasta water. Stir to combine.
  • Now add in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and the sugar. Stir everything together to combine. (If needed add in the remaining ¼ cup of reserved pasta water to thin out the sauce) Turn the heat down to medium-low and let the pasta sauce simmer for 4-5 minutes.
  • Combine the cooked pasta and the spaghetti sauce together. Top with grated parmesan cheese (optional). Serve with garlic bread, a simple side salad, or your favorite vegetable. Enjoy!

Notes

  1. Purchase 85% or 93% lean ground turkey meat. Ground turkey "breast" simply doesn’t have enough fat.
  2. Italian-style diced tomatoes are the ones that include basil, garlic, and oregano.
  3. Extra Tip: Prep the spaghetti seasoning first by mixing all of the spices in a small bowl so it’s ready to go when you need it!
