A classic Ground Turkey Spaghetti recipe with Italian spices, juicy tomatoes and a delicious homemade spaghetti sauce that makes this spaghetti stand out from all the others!
This homemade spaghetti recipe was handed down to me from my mom and I’ve been making it this way ever since. And it's not made with your typical spaghetti jar sauce. It’s made with Italian spices, fresh onion and garlic, tomato paste, diced tomatoes and just a few other ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. I'm sure this is one spaghetti recipe that your family will love!
INGREDIENTS YOU'LL NEED
Ground Turkey - Make sure to get the ground turkey that is 93/7% lean/fat ratio. And of course ground beef works too!
Tomato paste - Tomato paste will help thicken your sauce and add extra flavor.
Diced tomatoes - I like using the diced tomatoes with basil & oregano added to it, but if you can't find those you can certainly just use regular diced tomatoes.
Tomato sauce - A small can of tomato sauce to help finish the sauce.
Seasoning & Spices - You can make your own spaghetti seasoning mix or buy a store bought seasoning packet. I’ll show you how to make your own in this recipe.
Spaghetti pasta - Of course you need the pasta. You can make this gluten free by buying gluten free spaghetti pasta. It tastes just like regular spaghetti pasta, if not better!
Onions & garlic (optional) - If you have the extra time add some chopped onion and minced garlic to your sauce. This is optional but will give your sauce more flavor!
HOW TO MAKE GROUND TURKEY SPAGHETTI
Full instructions are included in the recipe card below, but here’s a quick overview:
Step One: Fill up a large pot half-way with water, add a little salt and heat on high heat until boiling. Add the spaghetti pasta and cook according to the package instructions.
Step Two: Heat a large skillet with olive oil on medium-high heat. Saute onions and garlic, then add ground turkey and cook, breaking up turkey meat, until fully brown. Drain off any excess grease or fat.
Step Three: Add the seasoning listed below with ¼ cup of water to the ground turkey. Stir to make sure the meat is fully coated with seasoning. Add tomato paste, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce and a little sugar with another ½ cup of water. Stir well. Allow the sauce to simmer for 5-10 minutes.
Step Four: Combine cooked spaghetti pasta and spaghetti meat sauce together. Stir well. Enjoy!
RECIPE TIPS
- Don’t forget to salt your water when boiling your spaghetti pasta. It helps add flavor to the pasta while it's cooking.
- Don’t skip the sugar for this recipe. Since you are making a homemade tomato sauce and not using a premade jar sauce, the sugar helps remove some of the tartness and acidity from the tomato sauce. Trust me it’s necessary!
- Try to cook the pasta at the same time as the spaghetti sauce. This way they will both be ready at about the same time.
