Spinach Balls are not only easy and fun to make but they also taste delicious! Chopped spinach is mixed with your favorite savory ingredients and rolled into cute bite sized balls that are perfect for lunch, dinner or any holiday occasion!
So you probably won't believe it but I’ve been making this yummy recipe since college...yes a long time! And it’s always been a favorite of mine. There are only 8 ingredients and it's super simple to make. So I am beyond excited to finally share this recipe with you today! And if you love bite-sized party foods, then you've got to try my 3-ingredient Sausage Balls next!
Ingredients You'll Need
Here's everything you need to make these tasty spinach balls:
- Chopped Spinach: I use chopped frozen spinach in this recipe. Any brand will do. The spinach is then cooked and drained according to the package instructions.
- Stuffing Mix: There are a few different brands of stuffing mix out there. I use the Stove Top brand that is flavored with a cornbread seasoning (side note: I only use store bought stuffing for recipes like this, I make my own cornbread dressing lol.)
- Seasoning: Italian seasoning and garlic powder adds those classic, savory flavors to the spinach balls.
- Onion: Just one small finely diced onion will give these spinach balls tons of flavor!
- Parmesan Cheese: Shredded parmesan cheese also adds lots of great flavor. Feel free to use fresh or prepackaged cheese.
- Butter and Eggs: Butter adds moisture and more flavor and the eggs help bind all the ingredients together. *I only have 3 eggs pictured below, but the recipe does need 4 eggs.
How To Make Spinach Balls
The full instructions are included in the recipe card below, but here’s a quick overview:
Step One: Melt the butter in a small saucepan or in the microwave and set it aside to cool. Cook the spinach in the microwave according to the package instructions. Allow the spinach to cool, then drain the liquid really well in a colander or mesh bag.
Step Two: In a large bowl, combine the stuffing mix, finely diced onion, seasoning, melted butter, shredded cheese, eggs and the drained spinach. Mix all the ingredients together until thoroughly combined.
Step Three: Now using a spoon or medium cookie scoop, scoop small portions of the mixture and roll it using your hands into small balls. Place the spinach balls on a parchment or non-stick aluminum foil lined baking sheet.
Step Four: Bake in the oven according to the times below until done. I like to flip mine halfway through so both sides can get a little brown. That's it! It's so easy and super fun to make.

Notes
- Frozen chopped spinach often comes in different sizes. Roughly 20 oz. is what you’ll need, but if your package comes with a little more or less that is ok for this recipe.
- I use the Stove Top brand that is cornbread flavored.
- If you don’t have a small onion, then use 1/2 of a large onion and make sure it’s finely diced.
Sheila says
Looks really good. Would like to make them but could you tell me how many grams or oz are in the spinach packages, please?
Marsha McDougal says
Hi Sheila, you'll need roughly 20 oz. of frozen chopped spinach. You can either purchase a large bag or 2 small boxes. Frozen chopped spinach often comes in different sizes depending on the brand, but approximately 20 oz. is all you need. Thanks for asking, I've updated the recipe to include this information as well 🙂

Delicious 😋
Karen says
These are delicious and similar to ones we have every year around the holidays. I serve them with a sweet-hot mustard sauce (either homemade or purchase from grocery store). So good!
Terri says
Hi! Has anyone tried to make these in an air fryer? It’s too hot for me to turn on my oven rn😆
Marsha says
I haven't tried it yet, but I think that's a great idea. If you do happen to try, let me know how it turns out!
Anne says

Just finished making these for a potluck tonight. I tried one, very good! I think I will also make them for Easter.
Marsha says
These are such a great idea for Easter too! I'm glad you enjoyed them. Thanks for sharing!
Susan says
I made these to take as appetizer for St. Patricks Day party ( they are green).
Everyone loved them. Everyone wanted recipe and said they were going to make for thanksgiving (I guess because of the stuffing in them?) Had some leftover mixture so made the rest the next day and they were just as good. The only thing is that mine stuck to the foil so I used parchment paper the following day and worked great. Thank you for the recipe. It’s a keeper.
Marsha says
Hi Susan, I'm so glad everyone enjoyed the recipe! And yes parchment paper or non-stick foil also works great.
Donald says
Hi Marsha,
I buy chopped frozen spinach in big bags from Costco, but id love yo try this recipe. How many ounces each are your boxes of spinach? I've seen both 10 ounce and 12 ounces sizes at the market.
Thanks!
Marsha says
Hi there! I use the 10 ounce boxes of frozen spinach.
Carole says
Hi has anyone added cooked, shredded chicken or beef to the spinach balls?
colleen says
i feel like this is dumb question but am i just adding dry stuffing mix or i cook and make the stuffing and the combine everything??
Marsha says
That's a good question...You add the dry stuffing mix with the rest of the ingredients.
Darlene Hamrick says
Can you use a dipping sauce for these. Any suggestions?
Marlene says
Can I use shredded cheddar cheese?
Marsha says
Sure. I haven't tried it with cheddar before but I'm sure it still tastes great.
Suzanne says
This recipe is so delicious! I made it for my book club meeting and my friends loved them and wanted the recipe. I would describe the taste to be a cross between stuffing and quiche! I highly recommend!!!! Delightful!!! 🙂
Marsha says
Hi Suzanne, I'm so glad you and your friends loved the recipe! Thanks for sharing!
Jo says
Could this be made a a casserole and cut into servings? More like a main dish (I’m vegetarian).
Marsha says
I've never tried it this way before, but that's not a bad idea at all. The taste would still be the same.
Annette Stagno says
Hi jo
Did you try the casserole
Chrissy says
I haven't tried this recipe but I have made something similar for like 20 years. Instead of frozen spinach I used chopped frozen broccoli. People are always excited to see the Broccoli Balls come out. I will have to try this spinach version sometime!
Marsha says
I love the idea of using Broccoli too. I bet its also really good. Let me know how you like the spinach version.
Chris D Costello says
Going to try these this weekend but I think I’ll use feta cheese. Love a good feta spinach egg omelette. Thank you for the suggestion
Marsha says
Yum! That sounds good. Let me know how it turns out!
Amatullah Abdul Malik says
can I substitute the cornbread mix with rice flour the cornbread mix is high in sodium
Marsha says
Hi there! I haven't tried any substitutions yet, but it's definitely worth a try. I would just increase the seasoning a bit if you do since the cornbread mix has extra seasoning in it.
Mary says
Quick and easy to make in a hurry even after working all day!
Mary says
Yes, I made these as an appetizer for a party, thou I did substitute and used mozzarella cheese instead of the traditional parmesan cheese, so easy to make as a last minute plan!
Marsha says
Yes I love these for parties. Although I will admit I do make these sometimes just because and I eat them all by myself in about 3 days lol!
Stephanie Flores says
Can I use feta crumbles in this recipe ?
Marsha says
I've never tried feta cheese with this recipe. Although I think you could use it, it would definitely give the recipe a different taste.
Pat says
Can these be made & frozen to bake later?
Marsha says
Sure. Just make sure to freeze them in a freezer safe storage bag.
Connie Meneese says
I am nota fan of spinach but am tempted to try this recipe😁

You will love it. I serve at parties all the time and have to have copies of receipt on hand.
I do serve honey mustard dressing on the side for dipping.
