Smoothies are my love language! I know that’s a strong statement, but it’s true! They’re creamy, fruity, and the perfect way to get your daily serving of fruits and vegetables. This Blueberry Oatmeal Smoothie includes lots of frozen blueberries, old-fashioned rolled oats, and yogurt for a powerful dose of superfoods and nutrients. Healthy, delicious, and perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a snack!
Blueberry Oatmeal Smoothie Ingredients
Here’s everything you need to make this creamy blueberry smoothie recipe:
- Frozen Blueberries - Frozen blueberries give this smoothie a thick and creamy texture without adding any ice. If you have fresh blueberries that you want to use up before they go bad, just freeze them in a freezer-safe bag and they'll be ready to use for your next smoothie!
- Banana - Just one banana gives this smoothie a natural sweetness and wonderful flavor.
- Old-fashioned rolled oats - Rolled oats thickens the smoothie and adds lots of health benefits. You can also substitute with quick oats.
- Greek Yogurt - Yogurt gives the smoothie a creamy consistency. It’s also a great source of protein and other nutrients. Feel free to use greek or regular yogurt.
- Almond milk - Almond milk goes perfectly with this smoothie but feel free to use regular whole milk or a different type of non-dairy milk.
- Honey - Sweeteners for the most part are always optional in smoothies. But after testing this recipe, this smoothie does taste better with a little honey added. You can use regular sugar if you don't have any honey on hand.
- Vanilla - a little bit of vanilla extract for extra flavor. You can also replace the vanilla extract by using vanilla flavored almond milk.
Can You Add Oats In A Smoothie?
Yes, oats are a great addition to add to smoothies! Not only do they help thicken the smoothie but they also have lots of nutrients and health benefits. They also break down rather easily in a blender. This Strawberry Oatmeal Smoothie is another one of my favorites!
Just make sure when you are choosing your oats that you pick either old-fashioned rolled oats or quick oats. Steel cut oats are very coarse and will not blend well in your smoothie.
Tips For Making a Blueberry Oatmeal Smoothie
- Oats: If you want to break down the texture of the rolled oats even more, you can blend the oats first, by themselves, to create a powdery oat flour. Once you've essentially made oat flour you can then add the rest of the smoothie ingredients to the blender.
- Use frozen fruit: Always opt for frozen fruit in your smoothies! Frozen fruit gives you the perfect smoothie texture without having to use ice. Ice can sometimes water down your smoothie. So whenever you have the opportunity, always opt for frozen fruit.
- Add the liquid first: Add your liquid first to the blender when making a smoothie. This not only protects the blades in your blender but it also helps the ingredients to blend easier.
