Making your own Homemade Taco Seasoning is not only convenient, but it also tastes so much better than prepackaged store-bought seasoning. This taco seasoning recipe includes simple pantry spices like chili powder, ground cumin, and smoked paprika to give it lots of flavor. And it goes great with any of your favorite Mexican dishes!

Another benefit of making your own taco seasoning is that you know exactly what you are putting into it. Oftentimes store bought seasoning mixes include extra additives and preservatives. But what I love most is that it just saves me so much money! I’ve now started making my own chili seasoning and spaghetti seasoning too!🙌

Taco Seasoning Ingredients

The ingredients for this taco seasoning recipe include chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, dried oregano, salt and black pepper. But if you like a little bit more spice you can add some cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes. I left those out of this recipe because it adds quite a bit more heat.

How To Make Homemade Taco Seasoning

  1. Measure out all of your spices in a small bowl or mason jar. You can make a single batch like the recipe below or double the amounts so you have more to use next time!
  2. Mix all of the spices together to combine. Use right away in your favorite recipe or store in an airtight container in a cool and dry area for approximately 6-8 months.

How Much Taco Seasoning To Use?

For one pound of meat you’ll need approximately 2 ½ - 3 tablespoons of taco seasoning. That is how much you get out of one store-bought taco seasoning packet. This recipe makes just the right amount for one pound of your preferred meat. Of course you can scale this recipe up if you want to make a bigger batch and store it to use later. You can use this taco seasoning recipe for chicken tacos and beef tacos, but I also love using it in my Black Bean Quesadillas and Taco Stuffed Zucchini Boats!

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • ½ tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Measure out all of the spices in a small bowl or mason jar. Mix the spices together to combine. This recipe makes approximately 2 ½ tablespoons of taco seasoning.

Notes

  1. Storing leftover taco seasoning: Store any leftover taco seasoning in an airtight container in a cool, dry area for approximately 6-8 months. I like using these small mason jars to store leftover seasoning mixes.
  2. Feel free to double the recipe to make a bigger batch.
